my perfect transitional pieces For spring
I feel like I woke up one day, and the world around me finally decided that it was spring. The snow melted, the trees budded, and I can finally walk to class without a jacket. Nice.
However, I still must remind myself that we are in New England, and my go-t0 Levi’s dad shorts and Birkenstocks aren’t fit for the normal temperatures of a Massachusetts spring.
So that leaves the question… what the actual f do I wear instead?!
Personally, I tend to struggle with my fashion choices during the months of April-May. I never know if it’s going to freezing, hot, or humid. Do I need a jacket? Should I wear layers, or risk being cold? As a fashionista at heart, navigating the changing seasons during this time of the year often results in my sacrificing style for utility. But, this year I decided that was going to change.
So, for anyone else like me who is looking for some inspiration and advice, here is my list of my favorite transitional pieces that you can wear during this awkward limbo until summer.
Button-up blouses
These are a given, and they are so affordable. If you thrift like me, you can find oversized button-ups practically anywhere for under $10. I wear button ups with almost everything, for any occassion. Whether you dress them up, down, or anywhere in-between, they act as a fantastic layering piece for the unruly New England weather. I personally love button-ups with a pop of color, and I wear my bright orange one more than some of my neutral ones!
Baby tees
Baby tees have become one of my go-to fashion staples this spring, and they are usually super affordable. Whether you like something a little more fun (with a catch phrase or saying), or want more of a neutral look, you can find a baby tee that’s perfect for you. I’ve dressed them down with jeans, but also worn them with a mini skirt and heeled boots. They’re SO versatile!
Linen pants
Another obvious choice on my part. Linen pants have been a staple for me throughout the past year or so, and I am never going back. My favorites are from Old Navy (great quality and super affordable), but you can find them at thrift stores as well. They look adorable over a bikini, or even with a long sleeve and some sneakers.
lOw rise jeans
Some argue that low-rise jeans are a thing of the past… and to be totally honest, I used to agree. I thought that if you didn’t have a Bella Hadid or Kendall Jenner body, low-rise jeans were not meant for you. However, while I still have a belly pouch, I have learned that feeling good in an outfit determines how good you look. I’m never going to have Kendall Jenner’s body, but why should that mean I can’t wear low rise pants? I have been loving folding my baggy jeans down and making them low-rise, for a little DIY-moment. As someone who has pretty wide hips, it’s actually super flattering to do this with your pants, especially if you want to show off your figure a little more. If you’re worried about being bloated, or not having your stomach be flat, literally don’t worry. I was terrified the first time I wore pants like this to the bar, but no one notices your insecurities but yourself!
Midi dresses
If you want an item of clothing to make you feel like you’re frolicking through flower fields in Europe, a midi dress is the thing to wear. I love layering with them, wearing a mock neck underneath, or wearing a cropped cardigan or jacket on top. They are so easy to wear so many ways, and easy to find! I have gotten some from stores like Zara, H&M, Aeropostale, and even from Savers. They are truly a star piece, and look good on everyone.
blouses (preferably ruffled)
I have been in dire need of cute long sleeve shirts that I can wear out, and ruffled blouses have become my new best friend. They’re definitely a little harder to find, but Princess Polly has been making some really cute ones. My favorite way to style them is with baggy jeans and little kitten heels, making for a sophisticated but cute going out ‘fit.
KITTEN HEELS
Yes, you read that right. Going back to my “low-rise” comment — don’t knock it till you try it. Kitten heels are adorable, if you buy the right pair. I love getting them at thrift stores (if they’re in good condition, of course) but you can even find some affordable ones on Lulu’s, Nasty Gal, or ASOS. They’re so versatile for the spring and summer, and you can wear them with literally everything. Get a pair with a pop of color to spice up even the simplest outfits.
MIDI SKIRTS
Just like midi-dresses, midi skirts also give you the opportunity to channel that European, whimsical vibe. I have thrifted pretty much all of mine, and wear them with tees, tanks, and sweaters. They work with sneakers, sandals, and heels, and are so flattering on all body types. Personally, floral midi skirts are my favorite.
Leather bomber jackets
Last but not least, leather bomber jackets. These are such versatile pieces, and definitely worth the investment if you get a good one. I’ve been lucky and found my favorite brown one at Savers, but I’ve worn it hundreds of times. I like the bomber style because it’s a little more casual than a normal leather jacket, and the shape works well with a lot of other clothes.
